From my experience selling WordPress themes on ThemeForest I’ve realized a lot of customers don’t like using child theme’s for one reason or another and they prefer to manually alter their themes. This is a very bad habit because if you ever need to update the theme (updates usually fix issues, so you should always update) then you will lose all your modifications or you will have to do a manual update to ensure nothing gets overwritten which can lead to even greater problems.
To help fix this problem I have created a small plugin I call the “Total Tweaker” which is just a basic example of how you can actually tweak the theme via a plugin, this way if for some reason you hate child theme’s you can still make modifications to Total via the hooks and filters using a plugin (which you can also re-brand to whatever you want).
This plugin was created for developers that know how to code. Please remember you have purchased a “theme” and not an coding instructor, so if you aren’t sure how to make use of the plugin then you’ll need to learn on your own or hire a developer/freelancer to make advanced modifications to your theme. We need to focus our time on making the theme better via updates and providing support to our customers for actual issues.
Action Hooks are a very useful tool in WordPress and they are used to perform functions (actions) in specific places of a theme or plugin. Many themes and plugins, such as Total, use action hooks as an easy way for users to modify the output of the project or to add their own custom code.
In Total 3.0.0 you can now add custom content to any theme action hook right via the dashboard at Theme Panel > Action Hooks. The forms accept html and PHP (when enabled) giving you the ability to add content, functions, shortcodes anywhere in the theme!
So the do_action functions are already added to the Total theme and will run whenever something is hooked into them via add_action. So you, as the user, will be using the add_action and remove_action functions only to make your modifications.
The Total WordPress theme includes many useful action “hooks” which will allow you to easily add/remove elements from the base theme layout. You can see a list of all the different hooks inside the theme at Total/framework/hooks/hooks.php (screenshot below). Notice how these are all using the “do_action” function? That’s because these are all functions that will run in specific places of the theme.
Remember the “do_action” function is going to run any functions that are “hooked” to it via the “add_action” function. For example (looking at the screenshot above) any function that is hooked into “wpex_hook_header_before” will run before the theme’s header code.
